For my support to the bands I really worship, here are some of the reviews, written in Portuguese to the releases that deserve some respect (sorry about the english speakers, soon you can read it on paper):

Drudkh – Forgotten legends, Full-length (2003, Supernal Music)

A luz levanta-se no horizonte, num primeiro feixe luminoso. Corta o ar, torna as poeiras invisíveis numa dança peculiar, ao sabor do acaso, do inesperado e do imprevisto. Calculística, na maneira de se apresentar, este disco veio trazer ao mundo um novo panorama, uma nova paisagem, ora clara ora negra, ora forte ora fraca, cheia ou vazia, o aspecto pouco importa, a luz que se fez é inegável. Lançado em 2003, a Supernal Music, provavelmente, ainda não sabia bem o que tinha em mãos, mas soube cuidar bem do seu novo gérmino. Este album de 4 faixas de 39 minutos, à semelhança com o que acontece com os outros, não se sabe quando foi composto, mas apenas que foi gravado no Verão de 2002. Hate Forest e Astrofaes, outras bandas anteriormente criadas pelos fundadores de Drudkh, já tinham editado alguns álbuns e EPs, nomeadamente, “The most ancient ones” para a primeira citada e álbuns como “The eyes of the beast” para a segunda dita banda. Repare-se aqui que há uma inexistência (propositada?) de uma cassete demo ou de um EP, fazendo-nos consentir à partida a maturidade e confronto seco do que estava por vir. Genericamente, aqui vais poder encontrar um conjunto de temas daquele Metal Negro do qual tens poucas referências. Burzum e Primordial poderão ser elementos indicativos mas completamente desfasados da realidade. Tenham atenção, não é o estilo musical que é idêntico mas sim a sensação, o sentimento de nostalgia, a saudade, os valores culturais e a angústia que estão em causa e que, de uma maneira ímpar, estão ligados a uma sonoridade mais Negra. A composição em si é regular, até porque muitas das linhas melódicas se tornam mais fortes pela sua repetição e acento, pequenas variações e acrescentos, ao qual se a magia de uma aurora boreal numa noite regular se pode comparar a um estilo musical, eu diria que, a atracção neste estilo passa pela inclusão de uma atmosfera nostálgica e pessoal. Há uma clara representação da natureza na mensagem deste álbum, tanto na música como nas páginas do livrete, agarrada a uma arte manual de desenho em lápis de carvão. Cada imagem da natureza associa-se, claro, a um sentimento (escrito), aquele de que vos falei, que são, no fundo, sinónimos de culpa e consciência (para com a natureza?): Tristeza, Amargura, Dor, Desespero, Perda, Agonia, Solidão, Traição, Melancolia e Mágoa. Outra indicação da alusão à natureza são os desenhos em estilo que me parecem Sarmata, onde não só elementos como folhas, ramos, água e padrões alusivos de montanhas fazem a ornamentação estética do CD, mas como também cada figura tem um nome em cirílico (o nome dos meses do ano). Uma curiosidade, em relação ao logo, aqui na sua primeira versão, desenhada de uma forma invulgar, dando a ideia de uma escrita Sanskrit preenchida interiormente com um fundo de chão de floresta no Outono. Não é, eventualmente, um marco na música no ano de 2003, mas é com certeza, um marco na história do metal, tão simplesmente pelas reacções de ódio ou amor geradas pelas várias camadas de ouvintes e, claro está, pelo início de carreira de uma banda cujos cânticos dificilmente serão “lendas esquecidas”.

Blood...Fire...Wrath #1 (fanzine)

Em tempos de amargura, ignorância e bestialidade, inocência e/ou estupidez, não há nada melhor que uma valente chapada na cara, de mão forte e cheia, para acordar, despertar, ser chamado à razão, para te enquadrar melhor no caminho certo, no trilho anteriormente seguido, aquele que é o verdadeiro percurso a seguir. Aqui está a primeiríssima edição desta fanzine, Portuguesa, feita por mãos suadas e calejadas, mãos que gritam o sangue e a dor da dedicação, mãos que apertam o cerco da veracidade através de uma conceptualização agravada pelo espírito totalmente inerente ao Metal Negro, seguindo passo-a-passo uma ideologia que (e se me permitem dizer) é muito fiel à personalidade da entidade que a forjou: intolerante, rígido, culto, inteligente e determinado. Como alguns de vós devem saber, este documento é elaborado por Vercingétorix, o homem por detrás da editora Portuguesa Egg of Nihilism Productions e também, um valoroso colaborador/autor para os dois números anteriores desta mesma fanzine, que agora lês. No editorial, começa-se por ter um forte testemunho da posição do editor em relação ao conceito da fanzine e sua ligação com o Metal Negro. Explica, especificamente, situações controversas que ocorrem nos dias de hoje na cena, não só nacional como também internacional, ao que ele chamou de fun’erground. Apontamento positivo também para a explicação da foto que está na capa, coisa que nunca me ocorreu fazer (explicar o que significa), até porque a concepção é diferente. Se gostaste das entrevistas como a de Exile (Escritas do Subsolo, Tomo I), Vulturine e Decayed (Escritas do Subsolo, Tomo II) e/ou das biografias de Marquês de Sade e Lovecraft, tenho a certeza que, agora numa edição feita toda à sua medida, com entrevistas em Inglês, profundas e superiormente elaboradas, isto te vá parecer uma pérola do fundo do oceano! E é assim que, Blood...Fire...Wrath te cultiva com entrevistas a Wolfsbut, Infernal Kingdom, Nakkiga, Shaxul (Deathspell Omega, Arphaxat, etc), Ravendark’s Monarchal Cantile e Temnohor, de um modo entusiástico, bastante abrangente, conceptual e caracterizador, onde o autor mostra não só a sua sabedoria, como também a fraqueza de não saber mas com vontade de aprender. Um dos ex-libris desta edição, e talvez por ser Português, é o artigo em forma de teorema, O Império Ibérico, que, por um lado, vem fazer justiça àquilo que foi um passado glorioso dos Portugueses e, por outro lado, ensaiar uma ideia interessante de união Ibérica dos povos/nações que, ao longo da história, aí viveram e prosperaram. Atenção, que este artigo está escrito em duas línguas (Português e Inglês), onde a ideia principal é escrever um artigo que é dedicado à sua nação na sua língua materna, onde se pode exprimir de maneira distinta e natural. Obviamente, a versão em Inglês será para aqueles que não sabem Português. Em relação ao aspecto gráfico, ao contrário do que possas à partida pensar, este não é um cut’n paste, que apesar de "xeroxado", tem um aspecto simples mas eficaz e, sobretudo, legível!!! Esta fanzine, para mim tem um pequeno problema, é curta demais! :) Apenas 34 páginas fazem muita água na boca, de facto. Ora, tudo isto pode parecer suspeito pois, uma vez que sendo seu amigo poderia ser parcial (mas se tiveres dúvidas, podes consultar as críticas que fiz/faço aos lançamentos da ENP). Na verdade, mais digo, muito me orgulho de ser seu amigo e de ter o privilégio de ter lido, e apreciado calorosamente, estas páginas pois tu, já não sei se terás a mesma sorte uma vez que, além de ter uma distribuição muito selectiva (só para verdadeiros maníacos e aficcionados) é também de número limitado a 99 exemplares. Vulturine – Ossos, Ódio & Angústia, Full-length (2008, Goat Music Records)

Anteriormente já tivemos a possibilidade de conhecer Vulturine através da brilhante entrevista publicada no número anterior ao presente, mas vale sempre a pena escrever um pouco sobre, o que eu considero, um dos melhores álbuns de Metal Negro proveniente do Brasil, nos últimos tempos. Em águas passadas, Vulturine mergulhou-nos em duas Demos e um EP, introduzindo a sujidade humana em águas turvas, malcheirosas, imundas, execráveis, insuportáveis, tão só comparáveis aos dejectos laterais de uma raça em vias de ruir. A esperança é a última a morrer, sendo que, a morte já está nas tuas costas, também ela já morreu. A Humanidade é o fim. A morte, o princípio, estampada na alma de cada (ainda) ser vivo, a ironia de viver e saber que se está morto, enterrando os próprios ossos na angústia de prevalecer. O abutre chegou, vais poder saborear a morte, a foice na garganta, e ela a ti, devorando-se o apetite doentio da orgânica temporal. É um frenesim, uma simbiose cumulativa, fatal e inevitável. O javardo enoja-se, a larva também, estás podre. Nem como pó és servente e encontras-te num espaço indefinido, vazio, não és nada nem ninguém. Mas talvez, nem tão pouco nada, porque ainda assim terias sido alguma coisa, e tão quanto ninguém porque também nunca exististe. O esquecimento e a ignorância tomaram conta de ti. Se conseguires entender a insignificância (miserabilismo) da tua vida, vais delirar em pleno com a variância, pulso macabro e originalidade de um conceito feito realidade. É um álbum de estreia que dificilmente pode ser batido, e se estes senhores do Brasil se atreverem a fazer melhor, então é caso para dizer que estamos perante uma ameaça séria de qualidade, eloquência, eficiência e extremidade musical. Um bónus além das dez ceifadas incluídas está uma adaga escondida no rematar do álbum, uma cover de Master’s Hammer (“Geniove”) que assim, mais uma vez, tornou este mundo num sítio pior para se viver. E mais não digo!

Toreva – Skryte brany do neznamych svetov…, Demo (2008, Krologh Productions)

Aposto em como nunca ouviste falar desta banda anteriormente. Naturalmente que, assim, também é difícil antever de que país são provenientes e que género musical praticam. Pois é meu amigo, antes de receber esta cassete em casa, juntamente com o último álbum de Remmirath, “Polis Rouge”, de facto, eu também não tinha conhecimento de Toreva. E sim, são da Eslováquia, da terra dos Altos Tatras, dos Fatras e dos Matras, montanhas que pertencem à fabulosa cadeia dos Cárpatos, na região mais a norte. Se há país onde a natureza e beleza natural, crua, virgem e robusta de uma floresta de imponentes montanhas pode influenciar e moldar a sonoridade de uma banda, esse país então é a Eslováquia. É impressionante, e a surpresa da qualidade da arte por eles criada deixa-me completamente bloqueado, estupefacto. Estupidificado. Musicalmente os Toreva são a paisagem e a cor da noite Eslovaca, representando todo o bruto selvagem de um ambiente virgem, intocado e embelezado por uma mística só deles. Encarnam na pele o cheiro de folhagens soltas no ar, a terra batida da chuva e o orvalho matinal. Imagina um quadro pintado entre o EP de Astrofaes “Shu-Nun” e o álbum de Drudkh “Forgotten Legends” essencialmente para os temas “Clovek a hora” e “Vad velikána” do lado A da cassete, onde te dão o gosto por cerca de 22 minutos, apenas para esta duas faixas. E como cada canto de uma montanha tem novas surpresas, o lado B guarda-te a intensidade de um trovão, vertiginoso, implacável, bem mais a um estilo próprio enigmático por sua vez, com lembranças dos seus conterrâneos Remmirath, em partes melódicas contra-balançando o tremor provocado pelo restante acto. Definitivamente, os traços tornam-se ainda mais claros com o último cume, onde a descida a terras mais baixas se dá de uma maneira instrumentalista, delirante e perfeita. Os homens atrás deste 1º movimento são P.L. nos instrumentos e Beelphegor (Hromovlad, Immortal Hammer) dando a voz a um dos mais bem guardados tesouros musicais vindos de Bratislava. O único senão é mesmo serem só 4 músicas mas que, ainda assim te vão fazer arrepiar pêlos em sítios que nem imaginavas ter! Para mim, pelo menos, é um item fundamental. Amnion – Cryptic Wanderings, Full-length (2009, Onirik Records)

Eu não quero admitir, não de uma maneira invejosa, ignóbil, descaracterizada, que Espanha, o meu país vizinho, irmãos Ibéricos, também alguns Lusitanos (!), sim porque a Lusitânia não foi só a terra entre o Douro e o Tejo, a oeste do Ebro, mas também boa parte a leste dos Montes Hermínios, estão a desabrochar rosas negras, com pétalas reluzentes de aço cortante, uma espécie já em vias de extinção, originária das terras frias do norte, onde os homens outroram usavam os seus capacetes cornudos, desconfortáveis mas simbólicos, pois de símbolos vive o mundo, e Amnion não foge à regra. “Cryptic Wanderings” é, para já, um album de estreia. É também a consumação de um acto deliberado de atitude à desolação, desprezo pela vida, um ópus à escuridão maldita, às forças negras da natureza, um eclipse infernal. Desde que tudo tem um princípio e um fim, assim o tem a arte musical destes artistas já de outras andanças experientes, batalhadora, verdadeiros músicos de black metal. Não fossem eles elementos dos conhecidos Empty, Korgull the Exterminator e Atman, que tal como qualquer artista de valor, nem que seja uma concubina, se faz dar largas à criatividade, para exteriorizar de uma outra (brilhante) maneira o que mais e melhor fazem, arte. Traços variados, cru quanto basta, poder de reciclagem de estilos, sentimento, muito sentimento, tocado de forma simples mas eficaz e poderosa (assim se vê o artista) fazendo com que te agarres à terra como raizes de pinheiro em noites frias de inverno. As rosas ainda agora começaram a crescer, mas esperem só, que os espinhos ainda estão por vir...www.onirik-distro.com

TOMO IV

And finally, here we are again, with the fourth issue of Escritas do Subsolo. The release date was planned to be sooner but, the time goes by really fast and I was just not able to complete this on schedule. This issue is probably the last one. I’m not sure weither to continue or not but the most likely is to reformulate the fanzine to another format (non-digital of course) and only the time will say it. For now, I just want to introduce the bands I’ve had the opportunity to work with, learn from them and compose interesting and complete interviews which I believe they will stand as a valuable legacy. Annthennath, through Shaxul gave us a very appealing view of the inside world of the French band, while Drünken Bastards showed once again their usual non-compromised attitude towards whatsoever, fortunately converted to thrash punk hymns. Einsamtod and Dér, two young bands from Slovakia/Italy and Hungary, respectively, have shown their visions upon several topics, but not so young as Mandibula (Portugal) and Grotesque Communion (Brazil), only with one demo each, having though a lot to say and share. Check these guys out because, beside the bands they also share ideas and thoughts about other projects they are involved in. Turning eyes to Death Metal lovers I present you Entrails and Mandatory, two active bands playing very creative old-school DM. Their skills are quite impressive and especially the Germans Mandatory have proved to know a few things about what real metal is. Moving to another department, on the field of Black Metal with some mastering touches, the Spanish horde Empty are a MUST to all the melancholic BM, as it is The Frost, from Croatia and, in a widely different approach, the Belgium guys from Cult of Erinyes. All of them have something new and fresh to offer though, all of them have the necessary vibe to be respected by every kind of fans (old school and youngsters). Regarding other interviews, I leave the best to the end: the interview to Egg of Nihilism Productions just resulted in something awesome. If you are a nerd who likes to learn you have to check this up. As from my end I give you the second part of my article Pre-Roman Lusitania and, a (deserved) tribute to Drudkh, the Ukrainian band who brought the metal art to new limits. Besides that, the usual reviews. I guess there is a lot of them to read but, even though, I could write a lot more if I wouldn’t have a limit on the pages and a limit on my patient! TOMO III

Escritas do Subsolo (Spellings from the Undergorund) is finally out, after several delays and lates, after large number of working hours and dedication to compile what I consider to be the best issue from this humble artifact. I will not lecture or dictate any thesis about whatever it is and I’m going straight to the point. In this third issue I enhance all the interviews. All of them deserve some highlight, starting in Taaken (artist involved in Odal, Aske, Wolfsschrei, Salvation666, between several others) was object of an extensive first split interview ever made in Escritas, with questions by me and my comrade Vercingétorix. This interview was also published in Blood…Fire…Wrath…#3. To remark this moment I include a poster A4 of Taaken in this edition. For the first time also, there’s an interview to a magazine, from USA, the Convivial Hermit Magazine, one of the best from that continent to me. Then, there is a remarkable group of interviews to Cripta Oculta, Celtic Dance, Arkenstone and Bruma Obscura, all bands from Portugal which makes the link to the first part of the article “Pre-Roman Lusitania”. The interviewed bands have here a very close approach to their musicality and connection to this ancient people from West Iberia. The Portuguese edition has the article and interviews, as homage to my own language, bands and topic.To complete the issue, are the visions and words spelled by Riddle of Meander, Eterna Penumbra, KRV, Veér, Age of Agony and Evil (this one made by Patrício Duarte). Considering other rubrics I included a Tribute to Defuntos, from Portugal, a band to have in account if you are into real cult depressive and funeral black metal. Death in their music and energy in their activity, they still move hard the walls of the cemeteries to enter inside a world that you don’t want to know: your own grave. For the rest, I also included for the first time reviews to fanzines, very unfortunately, the number doesn’t reach at all what I’ve planned but even though, I think is a sympathic amount of reviews. I never did so many reviews as now, but there is more to come in the next issue.

TOMO II

Finally the second issue is here! A long time I was waiting to release this opus and share all the words, thoughts and perspectives of all minds included herein. After almost one year from the first issue I have to greet all the people that continued at my side and all the new people I met through the zine. Is good to understand that, on contrary of what some say, the underground is quite alive and strong. Despite all the diseases and worms present in every corner of this planet the mean is a healthy cultural space there are still out there many decent people who is willing to move on in the underground with honor, dedication and discipline.
The content included is basically the same of TOMO I, and here I remark the dedication of all bands. One big difference regarding the previous number is the volume of reviews. As I got releases by trades or to review, I decided that I would listen to all the music that I got in a form of gratitude and retribution to the gesture. Of course due the volume of stuff I received, not all the items I got are here included so, to fix that is going to be released a new issue very soon to review the rest of releases pending. Attila’s biography is a sequence of the previous article, about the Huns, and complete a view of this people that made some important marks in Europe’s history. Lovecraft’s byography, by other hand, follow the life and work of a man that turned singular by several points of view. The interviews, by it’s end aimed to be longer and more complete, taking an insight view of remarkable characters of each person/band. To finish, I just would like to recall people to pay attention to the paperzines. This documents are the fruit of many work and dedication, are the testimony and the word of so many great bands, personalities and cultures that cannot be replaced by a website screen with pretty colors. The price they cost is just a symbolic action to have it in your hands and appreciate it in a much higher level than sitting hours in front of a monitor. If you are with me on this thought so support

TOMO I

Escritas do Subsolo (Spellings from the Underground) was born from the deepest parts of the earth, the caves of my mind. In the beginning of the year of MMVIII, inspired by the landscapes of Bükk Mountains, the forests of Northern Hungary, and the gelid wind of the steppes, I came with the determination to get this achievement. The success of this is only possible due the true spirit of the underground, comradeship and participation of all the Hordes that worked together with me. Each band/personality gave me the chance of get to know them a little better than the music that they make. I tried to conduct the interviews to a closer point of view, figuring out the other side of the band. The music, beside all the senses that can give to the listener, all the miscellaneous feelings, starting from the sadness, wrath, rebellion and hatred travelling to power, dreams and atmospheric scenes, has a very strong concept behind it. Since the beginning of Humanity, the music is above all, the expression of some emotion, act or ceremony. Is integrated and associated with the humankind, since the born to the present days. Is also a communication media, bright and full of art. This art, the elaborated expressions of the creative minds into massive objects, take in something much more besides music.
About the topics, styles and types, my choice for this first issue, was shortly limited, within Metal Music borders. Of course, the mark is always the underground level. Realize the slightly vast range of realities. For me, no matter the style, it’s art. It’s the expression of several minds and cultures, concepts and different passions. Is converted into human value, human heritage and something eternally carved in stone of existence. Each music is unique just for being and we are gifted by the possibility of hear it, and listen what the artist wanted to share with us, from is own mind…The converted ones in music shit projects are not here featured although, in this issue, I didn’t limit the style range. I don’t imagine myself all the time just listening just one Metal style, not even two. Like me, many people on this earth’s face. So, in this issue, we have the random order of interviews of Marblebog, Exile, Dark Forest and Remmirath showing up their visions of nature, connected with different life (and death) philosophies and concepts. Since the philosophic and abstract matters are spoken by Marblebog, Dark Forest speaks about the Viking/Scandinavian heritage in Canada. The dark nature was conducted by Exile’s mentor and, Remmirath gives us a perspective about Slovakia nature and culture as well. The darkest sides of the world were featured by Balmog and Slidhr, while the poetic and melancholic music of Omitir is a little bit explained. In Tha Umbra, Gwydion, Epping Forest and MONS LVNAE told us more about their lyrical and musical inspirations, as their carrier on the metal scene. Sombre Labyrinthe and his point of views and perspectives about humanism are faced here and Concealment, with intricate musical and lyrical composition, speaks about the metamorphosis on Kafka style. Hunok is asked about their associated Hun culture and music. This band, actually, was the bridge to the article about the Huns, with an approach about this people and culture that, I hope, can give you all, a good introduction. Of course there’s much more to tell, which is not possible just in two pages. An approach as well, very interesting was made about the Marquis de Sade, the French personality, presented here with a biography.
Relating the reviews, this small issue for now, was constructed with the great collaboration of Herege Warfare Productions, with some offered items to review. The other reviewed releases are of my own choice, with no special criteria on the selection, but trying to show up a shortlist of Portuguese bands releases.
Concerning this issue, it was thought to be printed in two idioms but, due to several difficulties, it was understood that the English version only, is the best solution. Under reasons that is not worthy to speak here about, and if we want to share all the words contained here, for the joy of all who appreciate it, the better option was this printed edition limited to 300 copies.
Finally, I hope you can enjoy this document, since this cover some bands and articles not so usually featured in the underground media.

Forging TOMO II Hibernu MMIX 18/12/2008

The new act is being prepared.
Expect deeper interviews to bands such as Decayed, Blut Aus Nord, The Stone, Vorkuta, Vérzivatar, Graveyard, Disaffected, Velnias and others.

The Reviews chapter is being largely increased due the amount of trades and offers. Since now, my thanks to all the distros/labels/bands/individuals/zines that showed interest in keep the old spirit.

Esta fanzine, com o nome Escritas do Subsolo, com previsão de saída do primeiro número no final de Maio, de índole ainda modesta, vai ser dedicada a todos os tipos de metal, dando especial ênfase a bandas ou projectos do espectro do metal underground nacional e internacional.

As principais rubricas são as habituais, com entrevistas, lançamentos, concertos e editoras, etc, mas vai ser inserida outra componente cultural, com artigos sobre diversos temas, desde biografias, leituras, locais de interesse, assuntos de culto e novidades. Está a ser pensado a edição de um CD compilação, com várias bandas do espectro underground.

A revista será editada em língua inglesa com uma tiragem de 300 cópias.

This fanzine, with the name Spellings of Underground, with forecast output of the first issue in late May, still modest in nature, is going to be dedicated to all types of metal with a special emphasis on projects or bands of the spectrum of national and international underground metal music.

The main items are the usual, with interviews, news, concerts and labels, etc., but is going to be made with other cultural component, with articles on various subjects, from biographies, readings, places of interest, matters of religion/philosophy and news. It is in way a compilation CD, with bands from the underground spectrum.

The magazine will be edited in english language with a printing of 300 copies.
